WELCOME TO STAGE 2 - 2019
Welcome back to another year of fun and learning here at Oakville Public School. We are all looking forward to an inspiring and enjoyable year together.
During these first few weeks of school, our classes will be involved in a variety of activities designed to establish group cohesion, strengthen social skills, reinforce rules and develop important routines. Building on the information passed on from your child’s previous teachers, a number of assessment tasks will be completed to identify individual strengths and learning needs. If you feel your child has any particular needs that should be brought to our attention, please don’t hesitate in contacting us. We welcome and encourage open dialogue and the important partnership we have in the education of your child.
At various times each week students will be taught by Miss Rose. Miss Rose will be teaching Geometry, Statistics and Probability to our classes; all lessons will be conducted in your child’s classroom.
Miss Roach will be taking the Stage 2 classes for a period of an hour each week in the library. All students will be encouraged to borrow books from our library each week. It will be important that your child develops positive borrowing habits as our primary Home Reading Program requires students to read from at least one library book as part of the weekly homework tasks. We encourage all students to complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge each year; our school library contains a growing number of the prescribed Stage 2 ‘PRC’ books ready on offer.
As in previous years, we will be formulating Maths Groups based on the skill and ability levels of our students. Five Maths Groups will be organised with lessons being conducted at 10:15am-11:15 (Monday to Thursday) and 11:35am-12:35pm (Friday only). Maths Groups in Stage 2 this year will focus on Number (which includes Whole Number, Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Fractions and Decimals), Patterns and Algebra, and concepts in the strand of Measurement. Your child will receive homework from their Maths Group teacher each Monday. Maths Homework should be returned on the Friday of the same week.
Homework will commence in Week 4. A separate information note explaining the purpose, organisation and expectation associated with the Stage 2 Class Homework Program will accompany your child’s homework in Week 4. Home Reading is a vital part of homework each week and we would encourage you to support your child by providing a quiet space and some quality time to read; it would be great if you could find the time to enjoy some personal reading time, too!
Throughout the year a number of themed units will be taught. These units of work will focus on the Key Learning Areas of English, Science and Technology, Geography, History, Creative Arts and aspects of Health and Personal Development. During Term 1, our Science unit is designed to develop and enhance student understandings of the natural environment, with a particular emphasis on observable changes on the Earth’s surface. Later in Term 1, we will commence our Geography unit which will focus on the environment and sustainability.
As you know, regular opportunities for fitness and sport activities play an important role in the physical and psychological development of children. As is customary at Oakville Public School, our weekly Sport Day will be held each Friday; our allocated time this term is 9:15am-10:15am. We have programmed opportunities for skills development specific to each of the PSSA sports on offer in Terms 2 and 3; we anticipate a positive and rewarding time will be had by all. Our fitness sessions this term will allow for students to experience a variety of activities including fitness routines and various workouts. Our combined Stage 2 Fitness time will be each Wednesday 11:35am-12:35pm and will incorporate a weekly lesson from the Bounce Back resilience and anti-bullying program.
As part of our regular classroom program throughout the year, your child will be involved in using the internet for research and using email for communication. These activities will be an integral part of the classroom program and will be conducted under the supervision of teachers or teacher aides. The use of technology will be linked to studies in a variety of KLAs. At various times we may show our students visual media (eg film clips, DVD movies, video, still images etc), some of which may be rated PG (Parental Guidance recommended). Once again, this material will be shown under the supervision of teachers or teacher aid.
For continued academic success, consistency and social stability, it is vital that your child attends school every day. If unwell, of course, it is important that your child receives rest and can recuperate quietly at home until well enough to return to school. If your child is absent from school, please send your child’s teacher a simple note indicating the date and reason for child’s absence from school.
You will shortly receive information about our annual ‘Welcome Barbecue’. All teachers will be in attendance at this barbecue. You are invited to come along, enjoy a snack, have a chat and feel part of the warm Oakville school community.
If you would like to discuss any matter relating to your child, please don’t hesitate in making an appointment to meet with us at school. Our desire is to see all children succeed and reach their potential as interested and involved learners.
CLASS REQUIREMENTS FOR 2019

1 x red pencil (for marking)
2 x blue biros (not felt or multi colour please)

Each term, we recommend that missing, broken or inadequate stationery and equipment is replaced. We thank you in advance for your assistance with this.
It is a good idea to ensure your child has a comfortable, quiet and well organised space to work to complete homework tasks. Further information regarding homework requirements will follow in the coming weeks.
Crunch and Sip will continue and students will be invited during the morning session to participate in this activity. We remind parents that only fresh fruit and/or vegetables are to be consumed during Crunch and Sip time. Students may bring a bottle of water into the classroom from which to sip throughout the day.
