    • Environmental Club

      This year at Oakville Public School an Environmental club was established.  Students interested in the Environment were invited to spend one lunch time a week looking at various environmental issues.

      Presently there are 25 students from 3-6 who are ECM (Environmental Club Members) with Ms Vanderburg a classroom teacher overseeing events and providing opportunities for these students.  These students meet each Monday and do various activities.  The following are some activities the Club has been involved in and instigated.

      * Introducing a ‘No Waste Wednesday’.  The Schools Student Representative Council also supported this idea.  All students at Oakville Public School are
      encouraged to support this day by having a recess and lunch without packaging and using containers.

      * Conducted a ‘Schools Clean Up’ day.

      * Composting.  Each class has their own compost bin which in turn is put into the School’s larger compost bin.  As the School is a Crunch & Sip school,
      the composting is important and also is used in the three vegetable gardens too.

      * The Club also instigated an ‘Environmental Hero’ award which is awarded to students who receive stickers for ‘pick, flick & stick’ –pick up rubbish, flick it in the
      bin and receive a sticker.

      * The club was also involved in Schools Tree planting day.  This year the club decided that it would be a great idea to plant fruit trees.  Each class planted one
      Fruit tree to support this day.  It is one of the duties of the club members to water the fruit trees and also the vegetable garden.

      * Some other events the club have promoted to the whole school have been Earth Hour, Environmental Week with future events such as Endangered Species
       week and Steve Irwin Day to be promoted to the students at Oakville Public School.

      * Entering the Environmental Calendar Art competition;

      * Cleaning the schools fish/frog pond.

      The Environment Club continues to bring awareness of environmental needs and issues to the students at Oakville Public School.
